Dr. Rob's Take On Halloween Candy

Updated: Oct 28, 2021

Halloween is a dentist's favourite holiday! Well actually not really, it is a time when we often see more cavities in children (and their parents).

What Is the Best Halloween Candy?

Barrie Mitsubishi might not know the best halloween candy (check out their radio ad on Kool FM) but we do! What does Dr. Rob hand out for Halloween candy?

He actually doesn't say no candy. He has kids himself and knows that it's such a wonderful time for children. We feel it's not about deprivation, it's about smart choices. When choosing which candy to give out, chips seem to be the best choice for your teeth. They don't have a high sugar content, they don't get stuck in your teeth, and most of those little bags are air! It seems like a larger snack, and makes you feel more satisfied (psychology in action). Other candies like chocolate bars, are not as great of a choice but are a better choice than gummies, hard candies, and caramels. These tend to get stuck in your teeth, especially those molars, and are hard to get out even with a tooth brush. They also have a higher chance of breaking or chipping teeth.

What To Do About Halloween Candy?

The sugar, the cavities, Halloween candy can sometimes feel overwhelming for parents. When consuming candies, there are some thing you can do to lessen the risks,

  1. Make sure your children brush their teeth afterwards (or you! if you are the one eating the candy)

  2. Drink some water. Water works to dislodge the candy in your teeth and can limit the effects of the candy on your teeth.

  3. Don't keep candies in your mouth for long periods of time. Things like lollipops mean prolonged exposure to sugar on your teeth.

  4. Brush 2x per day for 2 minutes each time. For kids, you can sing a song while you brush or set a timer.

  5. Floss at least once a day. If you are going to choose a time to floss, after eating candy is a GREAT place to start.

  6. Visit your hygienist 2x per year. We really just want you to have a healthy teeth and gums because your mouth is the gateway to the rest of your body! Health starts there!

Happy Halloween from The Tooth Doctors
