As a Dental Hygienist one of the most common questions asked by my patients would have to be:
“Why are my teeth so sensitive?”

Well, there are a number of reasons why someone may feel or experience dental sensitivity. Here are a few:
1. Recession or root exposure. This is when you can notice that your gums have receded back and are not where they used to be.
Common Causes: improper brushing technique; brushing too hard or with too much pressure, using a medium or hard bristled toothbrush, grinding or clenching of teeth, short frenum pull or attachment and possible orthodontic treatment.
2. Tooth decay (cavities).
3. Tooth fractures.
4. Failing dental restorations.
5. Infections of the tooth.
6. High acidic diet. This causes wearing away of the protective layer of enamel.
7. Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). This can be due to neglect of gum maintenance both at home (brushing and flossing) and in office (professional dental cleaning).
8. Periodontitis (gum disease) and bone loss.
